Stalled during system recovery

June 3, 2010 at 20:17:06
Specs: Windows Vista, Pentium Dual Core, 2gb
My machine stopped abruptly today, and could not boot successfully. Startup repair indicated Corrupt Registry. The other resources did not get it to boot either...there were a couple restore points, but it didn't like these - something like being unable to find them. So, I ended up going with the last option- "recovery manager" - since it said it kept the data safe.

...hello windows vista *theme sound* and then on to installing drivers. It slows and seems to get stuck on 19/~43, Office Home Trial. Now, I'm not sure how long this is expected to take, but it seemed stuck, very little activity. Then I think it fell asleep. Now the screen is black, with a movable mouse pointer and a extra 'stuck' image of the mouse pointer. The little blue light for memory writes never flashes, but the machine is working very hard, indeed threatening to overheat.

I'm cautious about just powering off during recovery and hoping to try again, so for now I'm waiting it out and hope it is doing something and finishes.

So please tell me, What are the options should that fail, and should I just turn it off for now?

-M ...from Midwest

ps I have a backup iso disc...from perhaps 2 years ago :(

Of course the system is designed to return to installation after power out. The machine started up again, backup is there, so I am more or less OK.
