Check the drivers to make sure that they are running up to date.

1. Click Start
2. Choose Run
command.
3. type " compmgmt.msc ", This will run a scan of your drivers.

1.Click Start
2.Click Control Panel
3.Click System
4.In the System menu, click the hardware tab.
5.Click Device Manager to bring up a full list of installedhardware drivers, Look for exclamation marks that indicate trouble.
6.Right click and choose Properties to evaluate the status and troubleshoot the hardware device.

If that doesnt work you may need to check your IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers

Hope this helps!

signs of system maintenance is needed to be done. See if defrag and check disk can help to restore the old speed of your system.

It seems you have a dual-boot system: Windows XP Pro and Windows Vista Ultimate (?) ( not unlimted ).

Which OS has the problem ? XP or Vista or both ?

When you bought your notebook, did it have XP or Vista or both pre-installed ?

You have 5 GB of RAM. Do you have XP/Vista x64 ?

Well it's not a hanging system must be a sound card problem. Have you tried to reinstall the sound driver?
