Software RAID?

I have an Asus P5N32-E SLI mobo that supports SATA RAID, but I guess it does not have a chip for IDE RAID.
I've already installed two identical IDE HDDs and I'd like to RAID them... can I setup a software RAID in Vista... or use a 3rd party program?... or must I have hardware to do RAID?

Forgot to mention that I need to mirror them...
...and yes I understand software raid may be slower, but for what I'll be using it for it will be fine.. plus I already have 4 of my SATA drives raided via hardware.

Actually, the performance hit is almost identical as using an on-board RAID.
As for your question, Vista will do it; you can set it up in Computer Management -> Disk Management.

Thanks... I looked over that section but don't see how to do it, do you know how to setup a mirror array through disk management?
Thanks.

Step 1 is to convert both physical disks to dynamic. So, locate the disk in the bottom half, right-click on it, and select Convert to Dynamic Disk. That'll let you do a lot more with the drives, including set up a RAID.

Thanks, I'll check it out... Not home right now but I'll look when I am... I'm a little worried though as everytime I do a search for this on the net I hear that Vista doesn't support doing Mirror RAID... and XP didn't either, but there was hack for XP to allow it.

Hello, I have Windows Vista Business x64 on a new HP laptop without hw raid controller; I have 2 disks that I want to mirror each other; I converted them to dynamic disks in Disk management but I cannot find the way to put the volume on mirriring (only spanning/striping are shown). How do I have this issue solved?
Summary: Raid 0+1 requires 4 disks and is a mirror of a stripe. http://www.acnc.com/04_01_0_1.html. Now in theory you can do a hardware raid 0 and then do a software mirror of that raid 0 to a equal size drive...
