when i go to shut down my computer it goes to shut down it the screen goes off and everthing but it stil stays on and the only way to shut it down is press the power button

i think you're getting confused with sleep, or hibenate. push the little arrow on the start menu and click shutdown, the icon that looks like shutdown is actually sleep mode.
if i'm wrong then try shutting down with a batch file

shutdown /s
exit

its not sleep i know the diference what it does is like sleep though and the power button stays on blue and sleep is yellow and i always press shut down thanks for the help

I imagine what RobJohnB95 was implying was that the default action for the power button on the start menu in Vista is actually sleep & not shut down. And unless you manually reconfigure the setting, the system will always go to sleep any time you hit the power button on the start menu to shut the machine down.
