Comment:

I have had Vista for over one year without any problems, so I didn't install Service Pack 1 because of comments that it is not that good.
The latest version of SP1 is dated March 2009, should I now install it?

If your computer is working fine, I don't see the need to.

The official release date for Vista SP1 is actually February 13, 2008. BTW Vista SP1 is not exclusively an all-security cumulative update. It includes many enhancements & hotfixes that improved Vista performance & stability.

As with all service packs, if there's a problem installing/running them then the problem's not with the SP but with your system. SP1 fixed a lot of major & minor annoyances & I've not had any comebacks once installed.

Never wait, always install updates automatically.

Home user would be very wise to install all updates automatically.

There have been very few real and actual reports of properly working systems being affected by updates. I think the last time was years ago.

It takes corporate admins with a teams of trained techs to decide if updates are in line with specialized corporate software.

Just yesterday a major police departments computers were compromised by not proper updates.

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10

I think the last time a properly working system was affected by an update was just last year with the release of SP3 for XP. I also heard that some Vista systems developed problems after SP1. I recall some users creating posts right here on CN because of them. I think it's a matter of opinion. I always agree that it's always best to install security updates, but as they say, any program has the possibility of crashing, even Windows updates.

Thank you all for taking the time to respond to my question. I will make a current restore point and then install SP1 and see what happens.

You are a little behind on your SP tracking buddy ;-)

FYI: Windows Vista Service Pack 2 RC (Build 16670.090130-1715 v.286) has been available for anyone to download for a while now!

-- Windows Vista SP2 x86

-- Windows Vista SP2 x64

As usual, backup anything critical & go for the system restore precaution.

Good luck!

Vista SP2 RC is nice to have but it is a is time-limited software that will operate until June 1st, 2010. You will need to uninstall it before you can install Vista SP2 RTM. M$ do not recommend installing this software on primary, production or mission critical systems.

If you don't care and still want to try SP2 anyway, you must first install Vista SP1.
