Chris,

is that sound of a creaky door closing when you click repeatedly associated with yahoo messenger or a messenger program?

That appears to happen without being prompted.

I would try disabling any chat software from startup (in msconfig or through the software user preferences / settings).

Once all chat software is disabled let the pc sit idle to emulate the problem. See then if you get the BSOD, if not you have narrowed a possible cause and you can begin to experiment with the settings.

You think the problem may have something to do with the onboard webcam. I would make sure any chat software isn't displaying the webcam for the online world to attempt access, it may be that you are being flooded with requests to view and causing messenger to crash (unable to contact server) and take the OS with it.

This is all a shot in the dark, but that familiar creaky door sound caught my attention.

The yahoo sound was from my desktop not the laptop. I have tried everything I could think of. This is a fresh install of Vista useing the acer recovery disk. I had XP in it but decided maybe it was time to get used to Vista. I had no issues at all with XP only in Vista. I have a backup of XP and I am thinking about restoreing XP. I if will see how it goese with the support if anyone else might can help. BTW i got yahoo on the laptop also and it doese it without yahoo.

Thanks for the reply.

This morning I got a BSOD again. I did not get the error for it but when I restarted my laptop all I am getting is a blinking _ top left hand corner rest of the screen is black.
Now I am thinking it could be my hard drive.
Drive is detected in the BIOS. This is a Toshiba drive and Toshiba makes no diagnostic tools for there drive.

Chris,

There are free alternatives for HDD diagnostics. They may not be as conclusive as a dedicated manufacturers utility, but are good.

here's a link:

There's also the windows option of chkdsk to do this for disk integrity.

Have you run memtest? Random BSOD's can be caused by RAM errors also.
