Send to compressed folder?

To send files to a compressed folder...do you need to have a zip program installed on your computer or does Windows do the zipping. I sent a test to myself but I received a .dat file. The computer I created the zipped folder on does not have a zip program installed.

XP and Vista have what they call a compressed folder, if enabled. It is similar to traditional .ZIP files.

See help and support pages for zipped.

"To create a zipped compressed folder
Open My Computer.
Double-click a drive or folder.
On the File menu, point to New, and then click Compressed (zipped) Folder.
Type a name for the new folder, and then press ENTER. "
