so-called AVG 'user interface' element:
mfc110u.d11 appears on screen in a message to say AVG user interface will not open because this element is missing..... how do I correct this error - or re-install the whole necessary software?? thanks..

I think it's a quick solution to try re-installing the software. If the problem persists, there might be a malware and you can check your system using Farbar Recovery Scan Tool:

If you are thinking of uninstalling AVG and re-installing it:

Antivirus programs can often resist uninstall, otherwise the badies would do it. The first thing to do is to attempt to stop it from monitoring in real time. Secondly try an official uninstaller - see here:
