Reply: (edit)Some systems require the SATA controller driver during install. This is for both Vista and XP. You need to check the mfg of the SATA card or systemboard to get the driver files. The install requires that the selection for additional drivers be done using a floppy drive. This is a problem with some of the new systems not having one. When working one for a customer I take a test drive and connect it for the install (some cases have no provision to add one). There are no settings in BIOS that will let Vista correctly recognize the controller if the drive does not show up when you get to the format drive selection screen. Pressing F6 will not give you a different choice to search for the drivers either (Flaw in the M$ install routine, maybe they will finally recognize a need for options on where to search for the hard drive controller driver, this goes back to the days of SCSI disks).
