I seem to have a problem acessing the internet via my router when it is connected to my pc in Vista. It shows as connected to the router but not the internet and when I try to use the auto fix suggestion, it doesn't fix it.

I am currently connected to my modem. The setup I want is

Modem -----> Router -------> Vista PC

Can anyone help?
(I have searched google and got non relevant french forums (used google translate))

This website might help: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/co...
I use Vista with a Linksys router and have not had any problems. What type of router are you using ? Did it work in the past with Windows XP ?

I have a dlink di 604.
It worked fine with XP, no problems whatsoever. I don't know much about vista, I used the RC1 and RC2 versions and they had no problem with the router. I am going to check out that site now. Thanks.

I have checked out that site, I should of mentioned, I am on a wired network!

I did a check on the dlink website and it said it didn't need any upgrade. I will give dlink a call tomorrow if nobody here can help me.

are you using s static IP or are you getting the router to assign one? (DCHP)

I found that Vista does not like static IP's at all. It refused to connect to the internet unless I allowed it to ask the router for an address.

I use DCHP. My router assigns the IP's.
I forgot to call dlink...doh!

Problem solved.
I swear I tried this 4 times without sucess.
I called D-Link and they told me to check the XP machine also connected to the router and that had the same problem. In the router config page it said it was not connected to the DHCP in the WAN section. Renew DHCP didn't work so a simple switch off of the modem and router, then rebooting the modem then the router, it now works. I tried this 4 times!! Maybe I was not leaving enough time between the modem lights all lighting up before powering up the router!

Thanks for all the help.

This may be a little off the subject, but when I worked tech support for RoadRunner, we always had the client let the modem and the router sit for at least two minutes, by the clock, with no power and the plug removed from the devices, not just the wall to do a total reset.

It usually takes more than three weeks to prepare a good impromptu speech.

Probably off-topic too, but it might be useful.

If you use a static IP with Vista, you MUST provide a DNS address or it will not connect to the internet. www.opendns.com seems to be a pretty good site.

D-Link are cheap and it shows. We have a D-Link router at work and it drops the connection about once a week. I recommend you consider getting a better router/modem. I'd say Linksys, but they might not be around much longer. Netgear are generally pretty good too.

Hope this helps.
