Restore a file that has been overwritten

July 16, 2011 at 16:58:10
Specs: Windows Vista
I was trying to recover my quickbooks file from portable back up and accidentally hit over write. Poof..it was gone. There was no undo option. Is it gone forever? Is there a ghost file? Please help if you can. My hard drive crashed and that was my only back up. Don't even ask how it happened.
The devil made me do it!

Please help if you can. Thanks, Ione

It may be retrievable with file recovery software, but if it's been overwritten once or twice it may be incomplete or part of the filename missing. If it's been overwritten 3 or more times it may have been destroyed.

Sometimes the file system deletes the original file and puts the new file in a different location. It is possible to recover.

Not true. If the old and new files have the same name, the old one is always overwritten by the new one. The new file will only be written to a different location if you give it a different name.
