Removed malware infection with Malwarebytes. Vundo was the main culprit with a couple of rouge antivirus programs attached. Since the clean up, I cannot scan via ANY online virus scanner (Panda, bit defender, mcafee, house call, karernsky). And I cannot update the PC to SP1. I have tried sevral times. Error codes 0x800F0805, 0x800f082c, 0x800f0826)

I have re-run malwarebytes, run hijack this, spyware terminator, superantispyware. I have checked the hosts file. I have looked in IE's activex. i have run black ice rootkit removal tool.

I have run the vista upgrade tool, I have tried in safe mode, i have changes the win event collector & win module installer services to automatic.

Reformatting is not the best option, as the client has a complex set up & is a bit short on being able to provide CDs to re-install certain apps.

Any help would be appreciated.

Is Zone Alarm running? Uninstall it if it is. If it isn't post the Hijack This log.

Thanks for your response.
No ZA. I'm confident that the HJT log is clean, but thank you for offering to look at it, too. Computing.net "yelled" at me not to post it unless an expert asks.

I did go though it myself (as I am a tech) and via the automated log reviewer. Nothing suspicious.

No one has ever had a problem when I asked for a HJT log but if you're sure it's clean, that's fine. I use www.processlibrary.com to check processes if I'm not sure of them. progtramchecker.com is another site.
I was sorry to see castle cops close.

I seached Google for the error codes some people in other forums mentioned ZA. If you search it, you may find some other answers. There still could be something lurking in the registry that doesn't belong. I would look at the startup tab in msconfig and the Run folders in HKLM and HKCU. I take it, you know how to do that.

Also, you might want to update and run anti malware again.

Lastly, is Norton running?

Thanks to all - Given the complexity of the problem (really 2 problems) & the amount of time I spent before I posted, I bit the bullet & restored to factory...HP does a nice job with that, except for all the crapware.

@guapo - there was no norton on pc at all. I even uninstalled the AVG AV, Windows defender & all my other anti-malware progs I tried. Processes all appeared normal (Systernals procmanager.) there was something - I just couldn't put my finger on it. The fact that I could not run any on-line security scans was extra troubling.

@jag58ca - thanks for the MS link. I will hang onto it if I ever have this problem again.

BTW, No trouble with the first 72 updates, no problem with SP1, and no problem with the additional 9 updates.

Let's call this one closed.
