This is a follow up to my "will I have problems activating Windows Vista if I do a re-install"
I'm about to lose all credibility - so much for experienced in installing operating systems ;-) well I actually am but thought I'd come along and grovel before I do my installation:
The scenario currently is:
Two phsyical SATA drives, 80GB and 160GB.
80GB has two partitions, one of which is C: - Windows Vista.
It also has another small 3GB FAT32 partition which is basically old retro stuff like my Mega Drive, ZX Spectrum emulators, etc!
160GB contains Windows XP x64 edition. Thing is, from within Vista this shows as drive E. From within XP x64 itself, it is actually D, how I like it.
As I've mentioned I want to install Vista on a new 320GB drive. I also want to keep my XP installation, but I want it to be drive D from both operating systems. Would removing the current 80GB drive (with its two partitions) before installing Vista do the trick? Also I assume I'd need to put the 320GB on SATA channel 1? Then I could put the 80GB back in the machine after installation and set it to E, or something?
Another problem I will of course have is Windows XP x64 edition - it's on drive D, but it obviously boots from the C drive, and is also where its boot menu config is stored. After I install Vista on the 320GB drive, what's the best way to be able to boot XP again? I don't really want to have to do a repair.
Any advice much appreciated.
Alex

Why not simply get an image utility & clone the 80GB disk onto the 320GB, then swap them around.
