I have a question about reinstalling my OS. I've done it numerous times obviously but always used the same cd. I have several XP cds all from dell, all came with our dell pcs/laptops. I'm selling my Dell M1710 and I will format and reinstall XP with its own CD, no problem. I'm buying a Inspiron 1420 with Vista currently installed. I was thinking of formatting it and putting XP on, and since I don't think I have any extra XP versions, I'll have to buy one or something. Here's my question, can I use that version of Vista that ships with my laptop on another PC instead? Ideally I'd have a desktop with Vista and laptop with XP because the desktop I care about DX10 and the laptop I care about things working.

No, the version of Vista is probably OEM which makes it illegal to install on another machine other than the one it's EULA is tied to.

That also applies to using the XP disk, it is tied to a specific machine as per the OEM COA.

Not only that, if you happen to change the motherboard in the OEM system -- doesn't matter if the replacement motherboard is an exact replica or whatever the reason was for the change -- you have to buy another license to continue using Vista on the OEM machine :-(

A friend of mine wanted to do the same thing. he bought new pc with Vista and wanted XP. He kept Vista installed and installed the free VirtualBox virtualization program and installed XP on it. Now he can do whatever he wants on XP which is running on top of Vista. You can do teh same thing just make sure that you have enough RAM.

Thanks,
REMGU
