so here i am after installing vista. now i found out that my first (system partition was too small (my bad, didn't think of it ... xp didn't need all that much, ya know :-). anyway, i have my ghost image and think to myself, what the heck, use the vista dvd to delete and resize the partitions. surprise surprise, the delete/format option is unavailable for the system partition.

of course i still have my (good old, soon to be antique :-)xp cd at hand that did the job for me in the end ... but isn't there another way (than brute force) or have i forfeit the right to re-partition my hard disk once vista is installed?

Partition Magic or any of the other partition managers can resize your system partition.

that would be one option, kurt, but what about deleting/resizing the system partiton for a clean re-installation? using the vista installation disk, the option delete/format is only available for any non-(vista)-system partition.

sure, killdisk or any win2k/xp will do the trick, but i find it strange that you can't do this with the vista dvd.

I guess it's because Vista uses a different NTFS called transactional NTFS?

so far, so good ... but how come, once vista is installed on a partition, you don't have the options 'delete' and 'format' for this particular partition anymore when booting from DVD?

Sorry but I really have no idea only because I'm not running Vista myself (I quit the Beta program)

it ain't beta anymore ... and this is not really for my own satisfaction as i'm perfectly happy with linux ... it's rather about need-to-know :-)

p.s. ms claim that your system partition should be 15-20 GB ... with a windows managed swapfile i ran into some error messages regarding virtual memory on this 15 gb partition. ok, i took pagefile management away from windows (who needs 9GB? LOL) which solved the problem. but 15 gb is really small in vista-terms so i decided to re-install vista (or rather deploying the ghost image), this time on a larger partition but deleting your vista partition is not an option with the DVD so you need to have killdisk or a windows 2k/xp installation cd to get rid of vista.

jam,

The RTM announcement was made one week ago today and that release (RTM) is basically the real deal. True it might not be on the shelf yet, however; no more fine tuning is taking place on the RTM between now and when retail copies are available in stores.

I have formatted the system partition many times while trying the various flavors of Vista. Always used the Vista boot disc.
