Subject: Red x's in IE7. Need Help!OS: Vista UltimateCPU/Ram: 2ghz/2 gigsModel/Manufacturer: Home Build |
Comment: I've designed a web page for our church and almost have it complete. I utilized a map from IGoogle for our location. In Firefox it draws perfectly and when you choose to go to an enlarged map it works great. In IE7 I am getting red x's for the small map and when I select to go to the larger map I am getting a myriad of red x's. Does anyone know what setting I need to change to make it work properly. I have a HP Vista Home Premium laptop and it draws perfectly on the laptop. I checked my IE7 settings and they are exactly the same. Here is a link to the site: http://www.fbcarmi.com When at the site, select the tab for location. Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions!!

Reply: (edit)Nice site! Make sure that java scripts, ActiveX scripts, pictures, and flash animations are enabled. If the earth was created by a big bang, how come my car or computer or anything else isn't created the same way?

Reply: (edit)Rayburn, Did the location map draw correctly for you. It works just fine in Firefox, Opera, and even in Apples new Safari Browser. It makes no sense to me why it is not working in IE7. I have Googled enough to know that there is a problem for IGoogle Maps and IE7. As I mentioned I have a vista laptop and it draws perfectly in IE7. I checked and made sure the settings that you suggested were enabled. No difference still no location map in IE7. I went ahead and hit default settings as I've seen other IGoogle maps in the past. No help. Any other ideas??? Thanks.

Reply: (edit)It worked fine for me and I use IE7 too. Is flash player installed (a shot in the dark though)? If the earth was created by a big bang, how come my car or computer or anything else isn't created the same way?

Reply: (edit)Try this: In IE, go to Tools>Internet Options, click the Security tab, then click "Reset All Zones to Default Level". Click Apply>OK. I'm looking into this problem so it might take awhile for me to get back with ya. It's a very strange problem. Reply: (edit)I've been on Google and also ticking settings on the PC I use and I can't repeat the problem or find a solution. Maybe you should scan for spyware. If the earth was created by a big bang, how come my car or computer or anything else isn't created the same way?

Reply: (edit)Rayburn, I've got Spyspeeper and I run it daily. I also Spybot Search and Destroy. Both find minimal spyware that has a very low threat level. I delete them but it doesn't make any difference. I will run them again just to make sure. Thanks for the interest you are taking. I've read that Microsoft is aware that there is an issue with red x's and IE7. I've followed all their suggestions and it still makes no difference. Will let you know what I get after running both spyware checkers. Thanks again!

Reply: (edit)You're welcome. If you scan daily, then most likely it's not spyware. Have you tried repairing Internet Explorer as suggested by Cobra_R in reply #1? Did my suggestion in reply #7 work? Does the red X appear on any thing else besides the map? If the earth was created by a big bang, how come my car or computer or anything else isn't created the same way?

Reply: (edit)Tried a IE7 repair as Cobra suggested. Didn't help. Ran both SpySweeper and Spybot. Both found a few cookies but nothing more. When I right click on the red x, nothing happens. There is a hand where I can move the map around but no way to check with properties. On the web page, the only red x's are on the IGoogle Map page. I haven't experienced any other pages where the red x's appear. I've gone through a all the steps suggested by Microsoft. Maybe since it is a IE7 problem, I might get some help without having to pay $59.00. I would if I have to but I can't remember if this is something that their support would work with without the charge. Let me know what you think. Again, THANKS!! Steve

Reply: (edit)Let me rephrase that. If I go to Google Maps, it doesn't matter what I look at or where there is nothing but red x's. It can't be just my web page. Something in Google Maps and IE7 for my computer specifically keeps it from working properly. I have to guess it is some setting but I can't for the life of me find it. Thanks again.

Reply: (edit)I just found your post over at Tech Support forums. The people there gave some good suggestions, ones I've never thought of before. If you have trouble understanding what to do, let me know and I can try and help you through it. I have a Windows Live Messenger account as well as a Yahoo Messenger account, and would be glad to connect to you via either one of those mediums and see if I can help solve the problem through Remote Assistance. I do that with my friend that lives out-of-state a lot. Seeing the computer's screen and having access to it helps alot. If we end up fixing it, we can come back here and post what it was that worked. If the earth was created by a big bang, how come my car or computer or anything else isn't created the same way?

Reply: (edit)Rayburn, I would be glad to work with you. The Tech Support Forum that I posted in had some ideas but they were past my expertise. You might also want to look at www.bleepingcomputer.com This site had some additional ideas for people that design web pages. It was over my head too. Let me know when you have time and we can try to correct this problem. It is sure great that you are willing to help.

Reply: (edit)Just another quick note. I am getting red x's in IE7 at sites I am going to. Not just IGoogle Maps. This appears to be a problem I am having with IE7 as the same sites in Safari or FireFox work just fine. More than just a IGoogle Maps problem.

Reply: (edit)Rayburn, Found an answer and it works. Not sure if there is anything else I can do except turn off the UAC. Apparently there is known conflict that is causing the .png files to show as red x's. I tried my web page and the IGoogle Map works. Here is a link to the site I found this morning. Any ideas on how to reapply UAC without loosing the ability for images to draw. http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software... I have an answer of a sort. What do you think.

Reply: (edit)Wow that's interesting about the UAC. I have an idea. Turn the UAC back on, right click Internet Explorer on the Desktop and click Run as Administrator. Now see if it works. Have you uninstalled Firefox yet? If you still want to go on Messenger, I'd be glad to help. Reply: (edit)Rayburn, I did just as you said and it does work. I have restarted UAC and when I right click on IE before I go into it all is well. What I can surmize from that is somewhere my administrative settings have gotten messed up. If I am right I did read that there is only one primary administrative setting. That even though you try to reset the administrative account it will still revert back to your original setting. Any ideas?? At least it is working and security from UAC is back in place. I still think that is a step forward.

Reply: (edit)Hey Steve sorry I haven't replied sooner, I've been all around town today running errands. I should be free tonight to help if you still need me. I have church tomorrow (like you do probably) but I'll be free tomorrow afternoon as well as in the evening (after church). If you want to come on Windows Live Messenger (which is what I use most), my ID is (deleted by poster). If you add me, I'll be back later to edit my e-mail out of this post. I'll be more than happy to help you all I can with this problem (and with any other problem you might have, free of charge!). If the earth was created by a big bang, how come my car or computer or anything else isn't created the same way?

Reply: (edit)Hey Rayburn, Thanks for the offer. I really don't think there is much else we can do to it. I've just turned off UAC and all works fine. I've run Window 95,98, 98Se, XP, XP Pro, Vista Home Premium, and now Vista Ultimate. I think I can probably just do with leaving UAC off. I could right click and get administrative control each time I went into a program but don't think it makes much sense. This is easier and it works. I hope you have a great Easter. And yes, I'll be in church. Sing in the choir. Also will be taking pictures for update of the web page gallery. Check it out. Thanks again for all your help.

Reply: (edit)You're welcome. By the way if you don't want to right click IE all the time, right click it once more, click Properties, select Run As Administrator then click Apply and OK. Now when you run IE, it will automatically run as Administrator and not require you to right-click it each time. If the earth was created by a big bang, how come my car or computer or anything else isn't created the same way?
