Recycle bin changes filename of restored file

April 7, 2010 at 15:45:47
Specs: Windows Vista
Whenever I restore a file from the recycle bin by dragging and dropping the file, the original filename is replaced with another name starting with the $ symbol followed by some number and letters (info on how the file was indexed?). This only happens when I drag and drop but not when I use the "Restore this item" button. Why does this happen and how can I fix it?

I mimicked what you did and didn't have any problems with the files & folders dragged out from the recycle bin. I really have no clue why it happened on your end.

Might indicate a file of the same name exists where you are dragging to... nope tested it and a dialogue box comes up so that's not it.

That makes 2 of us. It's not surprising that you couldn't duplicate the error as well. I wasn't implying that this was a general microsoft error across the board for vista and I know that it's specific to my system. The question is why and how can I fix it.

Yep, that's not the case either. After searching around google a little more, I found out that the new filename is probrably the name of $I file (the file use to keep track of info about deleted files similar to the INFO2 file in earlier versions of Windows). I wonder why it keeps the name of the $I file instead of the original filename after it is restored by using drag and drop.
