Hi all,

I don't have Vista, so I need to ask.

If a user is an administrator on a Vista computer, can they edit the HOSTS file to block websites? Can a program that they run successfully edit the HOSTS file or will it get blocked by Vista's security features?

Thanks!

Yes, but a bit more involved than with earlier OS's. See my web site for complete info on this and Hosts Files in general.

Ordinarily, Vista will firmly deny you permission to modify that file, even if you are logged on as an administrative user. This is in line with Vista's security MO: which centers around protecting the typical user from himself.

"Can a program that they run successfully edit the HOSTS file or will it get blocked by Vista's security features?"

I believe the answer from above clarifies this additional inquiry as well.

Note: You can still edit the host file albeit after scaling a couple of hoops.

Hello JoAnne - you've got a nice site. FYI we usually direct users to go HERE for any issues related to HOSTS file.
