protected mode question

One of th fixes i found on the internet was going into internet options in control panel and unchecking the "enable protected mode" in security, I did this and now my IE works, but up top in the tyellow bar is reminds me that my protected mode in currently turned off. I use sbcyahoo and they have a full protection suite ( virus, spam, spyware, the whole shebang) which is always running. Am I OK to surf this way (with the protection mode turned off)? I aalso have Webroot spysweeper always running to.
