Below is a list of two problems that have emerged (so far) after Vista SP1 was made available last week (March 18).

1. Look HERE for list of programs that are either (1) blocked from starting after you install Vista SP1, (2) will not run after you install Vista SP1, or (3) experience a loss of functionality after you install Vista SP1.

2. If you use eSATA devices, the devices may stop working. M$ offers a beta hotfix for it HERE with a caveat - you must submit a request for it.

There is also a THIRD issue. Below is M$'s own excuses as to why Vista SP1 stand-alone packages do not contain the updated Vista SP1 Help files. M$ released this knowledgebase article the very same day Vista SP1 was made available to everybody.

The FORTH issue is the failure of HD defragmenter to run its full course after I installed Vista SP1. The error message stated that because of high levels of disk fragmentation on the system volume, it could not be completed. Maybe it could be just me but to observe the same result on three different machines I don't think so.

The FIFTH issue concerns M$ very own Windows Mobile Center (WMC). After you installed Vista SP1 the original version of WMC will no longer connect to your mobile device. The article below recommended that you uninstall WMC then obtain & install the latest version 6.1.

Thanks for the heads-up XpUser. Against my own better judgement I might wait until there's more stability with the future hotfix releases.

I have back-ups of my raid set-up but don't want to risk a possible head-ache of restoring them.

Just out of curiosity did you or anyone else here trial the beta or leaked release of SP1? I ask because I didn't see that anyone was having any trouble with it.

I tried the beta didn't have any issues with it. I even tried rtm before it was released. I saw nothing more new with it, and it performed very good.

Vista SP1 removed the Search option from the Start menu. If you really do not savor re-learning Vista all over again, uninstall SP1.

Not just that, the right-click context menu "search" entry is gone too. Word on the street is, the move might not have been directly unconnected with Google!

"Anyway of getting it back?"

You betcha -- see below.

Just in case anyone ever wanted to know why M$ removed Vista Desktop search ...

Shortly after M$ released Vista in January 2007, Google raised antitrust concerns regarding M$ monopoly of the desktop search (see news story HERE). M$ then conceded and agreed to remove it via a Service Pack (see story HERE).

If I recall it right, part of the agreement required M$ to outline how they plan to implement the change in this MSKB. The interesting thing to note is that nowhere in this MSKB nor in the Vista SP1 ReadMe file (look HERE under the paragraph General Improvements & Enhancements) has M$ ever acknowledged that the change was prompted by antitrust concerns.

Not sure why but after SP1 I've still got the 'search' option on the start menu though not on the context menu - I'm using the 'classic' start menu. My PDA connects & starts up WMC with no problem. Both drives are SATA & they are unaffected. Only noticeable differences are that boot up time, especially on my laptop, has been reduced substantially, and System now actually shows 4Gb RAM installed, though I guess I'm still only able to access the 3.4Gb as previously. So personally I'm still reasonably happy with SP1.
