What are your Advanced Power settings for sleep mode? Are you allowing the computer to shut down all devices so that they need to be reinitialized when you return? That can be the equivalent of turning the computer on from scratch when you wake it. If you're simply suspending activity on the other hand, with all the devices still running on minimal power, it shouldn't hang up as badly.

I'm assuming you've gotten rid of all the spyware on your latest install of Windows?
