Subject: Problem partitioning my HDOS: VistaCPU/Ram: 1.8mhz/1gbModel/Manufacturer: IBM |
Comment: I have a 100gb HD. I have partitioned 15gb (Primary partition) for Vista and it is now installed and running fine. I would like to partition the rest into 4 logical drives but when I try to do that I create the first 2 partitions and it makes them 'Primary' partitions. The next 2 will create as 'Logical' partitions. How do I make all 4 partitions logical? I have also tried making the whole thing a extented partition first and then split it up like you would in WinXP but it make the whole thing a 'Primary' and no way to change that. The main reason I'm pushing this is because I'm trying to backup my c:drive by using Ghost and it won't let me because I have more then 1 primary partition on the same drive. Thanks for any help you can give, Debbie

Reply: (edit)No, right now I have a 15gb C:drive with Vista on it that is a Primary, active partition and a 80gb Unallocated partition that I want to split up into 4 logical partitions. There is no WinXP involved at all.

Reply: (edit)15 GB is way to small for vista cuz it will 'grow' in due course. 40 GB minimum is recommended. Click on the Start Button and right click on Computer and select Manage. Expand the Storage section and select Disk Management. here you can manage your unallocated disk space. you may also expand your primary partition for the above reasons. to do so, right click on the primary partition and select Expand to change the size of the partition. Today's subliminal thought is: 'Calm down ... it's only ones and zeros.'

Reply: (edit)Sorry but I've be here done that. This is where I have been work on the HD. When I right click on the Unallocated partition it does have an option to expand but that is grayed out. Not sure if this is what I need. I tried expanding my C:drive to see if I could then break it up but that didn't work either.

Reply: (edit)I figured out a way to get around it. I used Partition Magic to create the first Locgical partition. The rest I did in Vista's Disk Manager and was able to create all my new partitions as Logical instead of Primary.
