|Are you trying to do this using FDISK? If so that probably won't work because it's a hangover from earlier windows and won't work, especially with modern SATA drives.|
If you are doing it from a Vista boot disk then you may also need to install the SATA drivers before you can set it up (downloadable from the manufacturer's website if you haven't got them on a disk)
If neither of the above are relevant, again go to the harddrive manufacturer's website and download any tools available - most have diagnostic and drive preparation tools which you can use to check & set up your drive.
