I'm having trouble using 1x500GB HD as a backup drive periodically by connecting in then disconecting it from the Motherboard, I have 3x SATA HD's pluged into the motherboard and I connected the PATA drive in changing the jumpers to slave beforehand so the BIOS doesn't try to boot off the PATA drive, when I turn it on the first screen shows...
"detecting hardware ( or drives )" then "no drives found"
then it procedes to boot up into vista normally and the PATA drive doesn't show in my computer.
I know what your probably thinking " why don't you get an external HD "
well I tryed 2, both resulted in a BSOD in vista, I also have a Zalman GS1000 where you can pull 2 doors down at the front and hot swap drives, the PATA drive is in the top draw but connected straight into the motherboard with the PATA and power lead, I will get another SATA drive in the future due to money shortage at the moment to hot swap but the PATA drive is the one I have for now and currently have about 30GB of photo and RAW files I need to backup as soon as possible.
could someone tell me where I am going wrong, cheers.

Have you tried to configure the BIOS? I think you have enable something there first.

Thanks a lot Lycan20, sorry it's been so long to reply, It turned out to be a dodgy pata drive thats why it couldn't be recognized, I plugged in another pata drive and it worked straight away, also I plugged the pata drive in as Master not slave, this was a blank drive so the pc wouldn't try to boot off it anyway, I just turn off and disconnect the drive after I have backed up.
I also tried buying an external HD enclosure from Maplins that said it was compatible with vista but obviosly not, cd had drivers for win 98 and 2000, vista wouldn't find any drivers for it on my PC or online, the customer support site was in chinese!! I'm taking it back tomorrow.
