Operating system not found error message

Specs: Windows vista, t3200/2gb
i got a acer aspire 5735. when i turn it on it is telling me operating system not found. how can i reformat without vista cd?

... if you had vista on the drive and it worked prior it'll be a case of typing in the correct configuration in the data store boot manager.

... try tapping <F8> key @ bootup select repair

... then to command prompt <<click

... once @ command prompt type:

bcdedit /enum [press enter]

... then post back here anything listed as "unknown" under its relevant {heading}

... {bootmgr} << heading

ie... device ....unknown

Thanks for the response. Your advice did allow me to get into
the system; did not see anything listed as unknown. However
once I shutdown the problem reappears on boot up. My only
around it is to choose "hibernation" not shut down.
