Subject: Open with - Program Not ThereOS: Vista UltimateCPU/Ram: 2.66 GhzModel/Manufacturer: Gateway FX530 |
Comment: Hi, I recently bought a new computer with a Windows Vista Ultimate. I installed both Adobe Create Suite & Macromedia Studio 8. I am very much used to right-clicking on file and choosing "open it" to open either Dreamweaver or Photoshop (those are the two I am having issues with). However, the programs are not listed even thought they should be (correct file types). When I browse to the program to add it to the list it simply will not open the file with those programs nor will it add them to the list. Can anybody tell me what I can do to add the programs to the list so I can right-click and chose open with then dreamweaver or photoshop . Any assistance in this matter will be very much appreciated! Thanks, UnixNewbie

Reply: (edit)The code mentioned is a registry edit. You create it with notepad then merge the reg into Vista registry. It should not be done by someone not fully versed with Windows registry. i_XpUser

Reply: (edit)I understand that..I have made changes to the registry before. It just appears that in this particular case there is not where to apply the changes at the specified location. UnixNewbie

Reply: (edit)No it is not how it's done. You have to save the code as a reg file then run it from the command prompt for it to be merged into the registry. Again, do this at your own risk. If anything goes wrong don't blame CN or us. i_XpUser

Reply: (edit)OK, I see what you are saying. I wouldn't blame anybody but myself...no worries :-) I have "altered" the registry before...this is adding code to the registry. I guess that's where the difference lies. Thanks for your help! UnixNewbie

Reply: (edit)Thanks again XPUser. Here is a another solution for all of those who feel a little uneasy tweaking their registry. All you need to do is create a shortcut for the appliacation drag it into the following location of the new SendTo folder location. Users/>/AppData/Roaming/Microsoft/Windows/SendTo, just be sure you can view hidden files.” I found this here: http://banagale.com/add-open-with-n... To me it didn't really matter whether I click "open with" or "send to". UnixNewbie

Reply: (edit)Searching for my VISTA problem led me here and I posted the above link change. Don't think it solves my problem. Where as I responded to a download question as to which program to open. I pointed to the WRONG one! :-( Specifically .pdf files. I pointed to pdfreader.exe. That was the compressed file! I need to change the association to the usable one. Any thoughts?

Reply: (edit)Me again. googled [vista file association] found this: 'Control Panel -> Programs -> Default Programs -> Set Associations' Great! But a .pdf extension isn't listed???? Sigh :-( Did I just rephrase the original question? :-) BUT, as I gave a program (albeit a wrong one) to open a .pdf ..... Why isn't it in (or added to) the default program list? Am I back to the registry hack? And, will it change/fix (or corrupt) the association (where ever it is now!)?
