Ok I tried this on the xp forum for the laptop let try it here for the desk top. I have one web site I can't load in IE, Firefox3, or Google Chrome. Fire fox gives me a Connection to server was reset while page was loading. I know the website is good because I can pull it up on my playstation portable and my neighbor can get it at his house. My neighbor and I are both running Charter cable internet. I have tried all the internet and virus software options and my host files look good. I have ran disk clean and deleted internet history. I have talked to HP and Charter and neither one has been able to help me. I think its something in the computer that my laptop has in common because neither will load the web page. the web page is r1-forum.com

That thing loaded really fast here.

Look at the event viewer for any errors.

Connect the PC directly to the modem instead of the router.

Look for any red errors that might explain why the browsers won't load that page.

I don't see anything that would have caused this. I cleared the log and tried to load the website again and nothing came up on the log.

Ok now that I'm getting a time out error I know there is a spot to adjust how much time you give a website to load but I can't remember where its at. I know I looked at it early today. Can anyone tell me where it is?

Hello yzfr103

You seem to have done everything except flush dns , a corrupt dns cache could do this

To flush DNS
go to start orb

in the search box type cmd
in the result panel right click cmd.exe
select run as administrator
type ipconfig /flushdns

when it's finished type exit

Also see if there is a rest on the modem\router , a tiny hole , you gently press a ballpoint pen tip to reset .

How would I do that on XP. I have tried powering the router down to reset it and that didn't work. When I try the dns flush on my laptop it ask me what to use to open cmd.exe, what program should I use?

What AV are you using ? Perhaps a change would solve your problem .
Many PCs come with Norton or Mcafee pre-installed and many people don't know that programs & features or install\uninstall will not completely remove either , the proper uninstaller must be used ,

http://majorgeeks.com/Norton_Remova...

http://www.majorgeeks.com/McAfee_Co...

If you think well It's too late now , there are way to rid your self of the "left overs "
but the best way I have found is to reinstall and the uninstall with the correct uninstaller .
Another way is to try "runscanner" to find anything that relates to your old package and tick & fix .

http://www.runscanner.net/download....

So what i am saying is if you can connect with out you current AV package , change it .

I have no problems with AVG 8 free and vista's fire wall + router ,

A laptop used in public places may need a third party firewall .

No 404s this time !

It seem to me that the forum has blocked your ip address # for some reason as I can get straight into it .Perhaps they have done this by mistake , it can happen , for example this forum could block anybody for abusive language , spam , cracks that sort of thing , So ask the forum in writing ( snail mail ) If and why you have been blocked .

I thought about that. I haven't been on the forum in about 3 years (I never got in trouble while I was on) and when I got my new service at home and new computer I tried to sign back up. I had to go to my mother in laws house and sign up due to my old screen name being expired and wrote them a e-mail asking them why I couldn't log on at home and they never answered me. Any way other than snail mail to find out if my ip address is blocked?

Ok did some more digging and the r1-forum is hosted by verticalscope.com and it seems that I can't load any of the pages they host like gixxer.com, r6-forum.com, and r1messagenet.com to name a few. I sent them a message asking them to look into it and see whats up. I will let you guys know what turns up. Oh and I haven't heard from the neighbor yet to see if he could get my laptop to log on at his house.

Is there a separate modem or is it all in one? If it's separate, connect the PC directly to the modem.

That website was the same one, just in IP form. I don't think it's Charter because your neighbor gets it. I think there is something wrong with your modem/router.

Would your neighbor bring his modem/router to your house?

Try one more thing. Shut all PCs and devices except the laptop. Then try the site.

If you are using your neighbour's modem\router then you are using his ip address # , It still seems to me that the site is blocking you .
