Worked with a M$ Support Professional who helped me to install SP1 on my Vista Ultimate Machine. I had tried and could not get it to install but after much work finally did.

I almost wish I had left the machine alone because now whenever I try to access a Office 2007 program I get a Windows Installer popup saying "This Package Could Not be opened. Verify that the update packge exits...that it is a valid update installer package"

If I go to my documents and locate a word document, I am getting the same message. Same with Publisher.

I have tried to uninstall Office 2007 and it goes so far and stops. I've tried to install over the top of itself and it doesn't work.

If anybody has had this problem and corrected it, I would sure appreciate some help. I've been waiting for M$ support to contact me and haven't heard in days.

I don't want to refomat to correct this unless there is no other alternative. Thanks for any and all help.

I almost wish I had left the machine alone ...

You could by using System Restore back to a time before you fumed with Vista SP1. Otherwise I guess reformat & reinstall Vista & Office 2007 may be your best option given the facts that you have had a series of problems as noted by your earlier threads, some of which are listed below.

This is just my opinion.

P.S. If you do reinstall Vista, don't install SP1. SP1 turned out to cause more problems which is why M$ removed it from Automatic update for an indefinite period of time.

According to M$....

"this problem may occur if the registry contains Microsoft Windows Installer information from an earlier Office installation."

And the fix:

Run the Windows Installer CleanUp utility to remove the Windows Installer registry settings & reinstall Office.

Thanks for your information Sabertooth. I went to the Support Article and copied this "The Windows Installer Clean Up Utility should not be used to remove the 2007 Microsoft Office System installation information." It even shows at the bottom the programs it will work with. It lists several but not Office 2007.

If you have any other ideas, I would sure appreciate it.

Thanks XP User. I do want you to know that after the inplace upgrade install my comnputer is working better than it ever has. I just want to solve this problem with the Windows Installer. It is only Office 2007 that is affected. It amazed me that you were able to gather several of my old posts.

Too bad that Clean Up Utility won't work as anticipated ;-(

If you haven't tried it yet, there's a different fix under Article #928218 that you might want to look at. This one specifically describes how to uninstall an existing 2007 Microsoft Office system if you cannot uninstall it via the Add or Remove Programs feature in Control Panel.

Thanks Sabertooth. Think I'm going to use that. It looks like you can totally wipe out Office 2007 and then reinstall it.

I've worked in the registry before and am comfortable doing so. Will let you know how I make out.

"It amazed me that you were able to gather several of my old posts."

Yeah it amazes me as well. I noticed it's happening alot more. I don't see what the OP's original problem has to do with his old posts. IOW, I think it's unneccessary to list them. They're irrelevant.

Don't post if you ate razor blades for breakfast!
