Comment:

I recently got a new HP running Vista Home Prem w/Office 2007 and then installed Office 2003 Students & Teachers Edition.

Lucky me as at no time have I seen any prompts of issues, nor am I noticing any.

It does bother me a little that I still have Office 2007 patches installed, but since things seems to be running ok, best to leave well enought alone (at least not to worry about anything Office 2007 related).

But in that I'm seeing prompts to install Office 2003 SP3 and also prompts to install a new patch (Q943973 update for Microsoft Works File Converter) which seems to be requiring the Office SP2 before installing that.

Adding to my uncertainty/confusion is that the prequisites for installing Office SP3 didn't/doesn't indicate users must have Office's SP1 or even SP2 installed, and moreover SP2 seems plainly designed for specific Office XP Suites and Programs (see below) which I don't run on Vista.

Could it be I don't even need Office 2003's SP3?

Refs. from 'see below':

Office SP3 supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000; Windows 98; Windows ME; Windows NT; Windows Server 2003; Windows XP

Office XP SP3 applies to the following Office XP suites and programs:

Microsoft Office XP Professional
Microsoft Office XP Professional with Microsoft FrontPage®
Microsoft Office XP Standard
Microsoft Office XP Standard for Students and Teachers
Microsoft Office XP Small Business edition
Microsoft Access 2002
Microsoft Excel 2002
Microsoft FrontPage® 2002
Microsoft Outlook® 2002
Microsoft PowerPoint® 2002
Microsoft Word 2002
Microsoft Publisher 2002
Microsoft Office XP Web Components

Microsoft Windows Installer version 2.0 or later. Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 and Microsoft Windows XP include this version of the Windows Installer.

The hurrier we go, the farther behind we get.

First off why not posted in the OFFICE Forum ???

Secondly, just go ahead and install Office 2003 SP3 and and any other updates.

Yes one can have both 2003 and 2007 installed, but personally prefer to only have one version installed...

You obviously didn't encounter this issue then? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884202 It was my only issue with Office 2003 in Vista.

Response 1 - The issue seems as much or moreso related to MS Windows Vista updating (as opposed to which Windows application being updated). I tend with the OS needing Office SP3 installed (maybe others like SP2, etc), but so far (without comments concerning how unclear MS has presented the updates), seems safer to do nothing, rather than possibly installing things either incorrectly and/or un-uneeded. As for running 03/07, no interest there.

Clearly I've laid out that the prequsites for installing the updates, lend to as yet unanswered questions.

Response 2 - Ref. 'at no time have I seen any prompts of issues'.
