Subject: nVidia FX5200 very slow at Vista!
OS: Vista Ultimate 32bit
CPU/Ram: AthlonXP 3200+/1GB
Model/Manufacturer: Myself :-
Comment:

I am experiencing a very slow graphic performance with my FX5200 in Vista. Last time when using in XP, i can get 6k score from 3DMark01SE but now in Vista i only get 2.8k-2.9k score.
I've tried severals drivers version to see if it fix the performance issue but with no luck.
nVidia is not going to support or fix this problem for sure. Microsoft said contact your display card manufacturer.

Anyone having this problem?? Pls help me to fix this problem. Playing games is very very laggy.

I had the same exact card previously. Vista score for this graphics card is 2.0.

But it is capable of handling Vista Aero desktop well.

Therefore, what is your problem and what performance issue are you having other than the score number your benchmark program puts before you ?

Get more RAM & toss in a better video card .... but you can always go back to XP.

Once again, Vista is NOT a mature product. I dont even know if Nvidia officially supports the 5200 in Vista, they might, but I dont know.

Try re-installing DX10, try the latest drivers that support the 5200, but in the end, XP will most likely be a better option.

gkwong,

Granted, I do not know just how familiar you are with computers in general, I can say this much: you seem to be arguably out of touch with reality as far video cards are concerned .... if I'm wrong, feel free to set me straight on that.

And if you believe the *outlandish* comment about Vista holding your card back, you couldn't be any farther from delusion. The sad fact here is:

1. nVIDIA's entire FX line of video cards were never solid performers to begin with.

2. Your FX 5200 in particular is a pathetically CRAPPY video card -- don't let the DX9 BS fool you; in addition to what one of the responses from above is trying to also imply. For instance, if you pit the FX 5200 against the now much dated Ti4200 -- it loses woefully.

3. Will anyone building or attempting to moderately setup a "Vista Ready" machine (for even contemporary use) equip the rig with a Ti4200? The answer is bound to be an overwhelming NO!

As far as the nuance about Vista NOT being a mature product. I will take that with an avalanche of salt. I have had Vista (RTM) running for close to two years now & I can tell you that statement is flat out misleading -- perhaps on purpose too.

In case you missed it or never bothered to check, here's nVIDIA's "Vista Ready" solutions. Now, I gotta tell ya, it is no mistake that the FX 5200 isn't featured on there. If you consider that the FX 5200 has never been able to adequately exploit DX9 advantages, it is foolhardy to expect the same card to flourish under DX10. But I guess certain folks believe the reason for that is bad Vista coding, as well as everything else that happens when running Vista on any machine ..... LOL!

Good luck looking for a Vista driver to transform your FX 5200 into a performance beast & if you can't find one, keep piling on the "Vista is responsible for supplying my nVIDIA driver" offensive .... see if M$ cares.

Sheesh!!!

Why does everyone knock the FX series??? I loved the 5XX0 series. And any hi end card from the previous gen will kill the next gen low end and mid range cards. The point of the FX series was to get the shader/vertex models up to date(back then) Just like with the 6XX0 series, then the 7XX0 series, and now the 8XX0 series. I have no doubt in my mind that an 8800GTS/GTX will crush the next gen low-mid range 9XX0 series cards. And an 8600GTS will kill an entry level 9XX0 card. Just the way it works.

Anyways, yeah I did'nt think the 5200FX was Vista ready. Nor did I think any of the FX series was really for that matter. It's not the speed of the card, but the fact that it is a discontinued product and Nvidia/MS doesnt give a crap about the FX series anymore.

The 5200FX is a solid performer in the right hands, but it needs some tweaking to be a decent card. My 64mb 5200FX plays HL2, BF2 just fine in "XP" on the 84.XX drivers. The 16X.X drivers doesnt work with the FX series worth crap. I'm sure it's the same with Crapista(vista). In the end, if you want to run vista smoothly, buy a newer card.

"It's not the speed of the card, but the fact that it is a discontinued product and Nvidia/MS doesn't give a crap about the FX series anymore."

I hate to do this because I have nothing personal against you. But I have to disagree with you .... yet again.

The logic you presented in the above statement are not mutually exclusive. Furthermore, Vista & by proxy M$ has very little to no responsibility here. If nVIDIA is not willing to invest support in one of their consumer products; granted that the alleged move is logically valid -- then it is their decision & not really any of M$'s business.

The card in this case is arguably outdated. But it is not "Vista Ready" ostensibly because of its speed; which is -- to a large degree -- the reason its production was discontinued in the first place.

In any case, what is happening to older hardware as a result of Vista upgrades is not new nor should it be shocking or unanticipated. Every new OS release from M$ has always obsolesced dated hardware at every debut. The fact that someone is aggravated at this time should not elicit an emotional appeal, when the upgrades is long overdue by all account; if you recall Vista or the successor to XP was planned to debut a couple of years after XP not 5/6 years later.

As for your assertion that the FX 5200 is a solid performer in the right hands .... that is like saying a Fiat Punto will perform like a hot rod by simply having Jeff Gordon behind the wheel -- as we all know; that's not quite true, nor is it that simple.

While your enthusiasm about a card that you own is not unusual, one thing that doesn't change is -- the FX 5200 never had a glorious reign & the card is bound to be at the bottom of any GPU pile these days, regardless of what OS is running on the applicable machine to which the card is coupled.

U all doesnt understand the problem i am having at all. I know this FX5200 is a crappy card, but the problem is with Vista the performance of the card drop drastically compare to XP. I am not sure what is really causing this to happen, maybe nForce2 not compatible with Vista?
Anyway, now i am using 7600GS 256MB and i only get a crappy 8.2k score at the old 3DMark01SE!
Or maybe this is another BS crap card?!?!
