Notebook to TV screen

In recent months, I've been able to hook my laptop up to the TV in the living room for watching movies and playing my SNES emulator... but for some reason, the last two times I've tried doing it, it doesn't work. Because my laptop's screen is damaged, I can hardly use it on its own, so it's always hooked up to a monitor, and I use the monitor cable to connect it to the TV. I just change the input on the TV, and voila, my desktop is displayed. Can anyone suggest why this suddenly stopped working, or where I might look to change some kind of setting that will fix this? Thanks!

... try tapping the <Fn> key with another key on the top row of your keyboard, there should be an icon on the key something like a monitor, they tend to differ between models tapping the Function keys should evoke the display (maybe!)
