I have a desktop with an unsecured wireless internet connection using a Linksys router. This works fine. I now am trying to make a wireless connection for a laptop with Vista Home OS. The laptop "sees" the Linksys router. When I connect to the Linksys signal the laptop indicates however that it only has "limited connectivity" and does not connect to Internet. I have seen several questions in your forum regarding this problem, but as a beginner in the field of wireless connectivity, I find it difficult to understand the answers. Who can help me with a simplle list of thing I can try, to solve the problem
Thanks in advance
Louis Harmsen

First, it is probably not a good idea to be running an unsecured wireless internet connection. You should use some from of encryption, preferably WPA. Second, are you using some sort of firewall(you should be using one) on the desktop and/or the laptop ? Check the settings to make sure you are allowing connections. Third, are you saying that there is no ethernet cable plugged into the router from your desktop ?

Try the Diagnose & Repair feature in Vista. Let it run through & see if it helps boost signal strenght of your wireless connection.

Thanks for your advice.
Yes, I know that an unsecured wireless connection generally is not a good idea, but it is not a risk in this special case.
Completely shutting down the firewall did not solve the problem.
As it is operating on wireless without problem, there is no ethernet cable plugged in from the desktop to the router. I can of course connect the laptop with a cable to the wireless router, but that is not the solution I am looking for.
I tried the Diagnose and Repair function in Vista but it does not give any useful answer
The laptop does receive the wireless signal from the router and indicates that signal strength is fine. The problem is that this signal only provides a "limited local connection" and does not connect to Internet
So the problem persists
