it sounds to me like this is a problem with Vista and not your hardware. Most computers are set to do things like compressing and defragmenting hard drives when the computer has been inactive for a while. Most likely the computer was moving around system files when you shut it off, and Vista cannot boot properly. I would suggest reinstalling Vista entirely. Boot in safe mode, and save and important files to an external drive or something. Then, use your Vista installation disc to reinstall Vista (this will wipe the hard drive, so this is why you should save your important data to another device before doing this). If you don't have the boot disc, contact your manufacturer and have them send you one.

hi NT56erbx

I had a sleep for an hour and the computer works fine now.

I switched the computer on again and it was the same problem, so I switched off at the mains point again restarted and then I got the message saying that the computer could not start and suggested LAUNCH STARTUP REPAIR which I chose and that fixed the problem. I agree with your comments totally about the computer compressing and defragmenting whilst inactive. How could I have chosen LAUNCH STARTUP repair earlier? Is there a way of getting to this before Vista decides itself that it has a start up problem?

Thanks for the advice to save my data to another device.

The original Vista set of 3 installation disks were lost during a previous house move and tried getting these last year from Fujitsu Siemens but they said they couldn't help me :-(

Which external drive would you recommend as a backup? a 2nd New Hard Drive or something else?

"The original Vista set of 3 installation disks were lost "

You should have something like this Recovery Disc Creator or Sonic Recovery Disc Creator.

Here is a similar tutorial.

I backup onto an old hard drive.
Also keep my really important stuff on thumb drives.

Generally, flash memory tends to loose data faster. I would suggest getting another internal HDD. Solid states and flash drives tend to loose data much faster than standard hard drives.
