I have had out-of-the-box problems with sound since I got my new Vista PC. It's onboard MSI K9N4-SLI Realtek Ac'97 sound, and they're shipping me a soundcard because they couldn't figure it out any better than me, but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas. I've had trouble finding anyone else online with this exact problem.

When I first booted, I had a message popup in control panel saying my driver wasn't compatible with Vista. I installed the newest one from the Realtek site and it installed fine, everything showed up in device manager and all signs pointed to the sound working, even the volume level meter bouncing when sound was played, but no sound came out of the speakers. Since then I have tried a variety of drivers to no avail, and checked all the obvious dumb stuff I could have done (the speakers are fine, on, nothing's muted). Anybody have any clue?

Thanks!

Driver versions:

98/ME/2000/XP: .... 5.10.00.6230
Vista32/Vista64: .... 5.10.00.6203

Check your driver version & make sure that it does match version 5.10.00.6203 from MSI. You could also extract the file & manually point the driver installer to the driver file if it turns out that you do not have version 5.10.00.6203

Although, if a sound card is on its way to you there is very little incentive to dedicate your time to the integrated sound.

I actually got the driver from that page second. I will try manually installing it rather than using the built-in setup and see if that makes any difference.

I agree that it's a little bit of a waste of time as I wait for the card to arrive, but I'm going to have to rearrange my PCI slots a bit and it's going to be a pain, and I'm also just curious as to what the problem could be since everythign seems to be working properly according to windows.

Thanks!

I don't think even Bill Gates can guarantee a correct answer to the above riddle.

I had a similar problem with one of my computers. The sound card was installed properly but I still had no sound. I fixed the problem by downloading the latest BIOS update from the motherboard supplier and flashed it. I also have a Toshiba Satellite that was supposedly vista ready but I had to flash the bios on that one for it to recognise the driver for the video card.

I hope this helps you.

I think I have the most recent BIOS (can't find newer). The card they sent was a piece of crap, so i'm still trying to get this to work if anyone has any ideas. :-/

I have the exact same problem, but a slightly different motherboard. Nothing comes out the speakers although the volume meter bounces up and down, I checked to see if speakers were broken but they are fine. Heeelp :(
