Hi to all,

Winhlp32.exe is no longer distributed with VISTA, so that help files of older software cannot be viewed (thanks MS).

The fun is that a search on internet will lead you to a Microsoft website promising you to provide winhlp32.exe download.

Actually, what you get is Windows6.0-KB917607-x86.msu (or the 64 bit version) which fails to work (at least in my case).

Could anybody give me a link to winhlp32.exe ?

Many thanks in advance - Claude B

Ask a friend with an XP System to give you it on a disk.

Medion MIM 2080
Toshiba T2130CT
Macintosh Performa 450

All working wonderfully.

Hi Intel 80486,

Good tip ! thanks.

However, I would like to know why the MS provided solution does not work. I found other posts on the net from users complaining about the same problem, so I am not an exception ! Claude

Have you tried to open the help file that requires Winhlp32?

If I remember right, when I opened an old help file, it either worked right away, or automatically installed it from the internet for me when I opened it.

There are 2 downloads to choose from.
You downloaded the wrong file.
The file you want is;
Windows6.0-KB917607-x64.msu

mad-dog,

No it is not solved per Claude post no. 4 in response to my post no. 3 that contain the same link as yours (didn't you ever check it out?).

EDIT: The above comment is in response to the following original comment:

A download is available for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 that resolves an issue in which you cannot open Help files that require the Windows Help (WinHlp32.exe) program
Go here. Problem solved.

I re-read the posts and saw that the link had been provided.
Hence, I then edited my post.

Hi to all,

thanks for taking so much care about my problem.

Actually, I tried both versions of the MS download. Same unsuccessful outcome.

Finally, I copied the winhlp32.exe program from an XP based PC, which allows me to open .hlp files.

Claude.

That's great! I presume you have followed some workaround similar to this one, correct?

Hi XpUser,

many thanks for your very interesting quote.

However, it did not work, as I was not allowed to claim for a total control on winhlp32.exe.

My assumption is that this is possible only within VISTA professsional, not VISTA home.

In addition, the native program I found in VISTA is winhlp.exe, not winhlp32.exe.

Claude B.
