No Internet connection for HP PC with Vista?

December 28, 2009 at 11:55:44
Specs: Windows Vista
I have an HP desktop computer with windows vista. All of a sudden my computer will not connect to the internet. My wireless laptop will and our Xbox will connect. The cords are all working. If you plug in a different computer into the ethernet it will work. I was told my ATT it is something with my computer. I have disabled my firewall and reset the settings back to last month, but still not luck. Any ideas?

What error does it give you when you attempt to connect? Have you tried using the standard Windows connection diagnosis tools? The error should give you an idea of whether it's a software related problem, or whether an internal component of the actual system has blown.

Internet connections failing can be down to anything from viruses to faulty IP settings.

My first instinct would have been the firewall but it seems as if you've disabled that.

Check the mac address ( physical address of your network controller) I just spent six weeks with same issue. If it is 00-00-00-00-00-00 I believe a vista update did something to the mac address of the network card as it should not be all zeros. Could not find any way to change until I came across a post suggesting to download freeware Technitium which will overwrite the mac address in the registry. ( back up first in case of problems). I also have HP with Nvidia NIC running vista home premium. ISP eas no help. HP could not figure it out even when I told them about the physical address issue.
