no internet access on vista

Specs: Windows XP SP3, 1.6/.99GB
Working on a computer for someone. He has no internet connection (either wired or wireless). I ran malwarebytes (although I was unable to update it). It found a bunch of malware that I cleaned up. I also ran ccleaner and Avg virus scn. It returned no infected objects. I tried installing spybot but it seems that it needs an internet connection to install. I installed microsoft security essentials and the offline update and I am scanning now. Assuming it doesn't find anything, what else can I look at to see why I can't get a connection.

The computer is a Compaq Presario C700, Windows Vista 32 bit, Intel Dual T2370 1.73 Ghz, 2.5GB Ram.
