No Desktop Icons

Specs: Windows Vista
Just installed standard drivers for a new Samsung EX1920 monitor (as screen on my laptop is broken). I now have no desktop icons, no mouse cursor, nor am I able to access the Task Manager (using control/alt/delete) or start my computer in safe mode using F8.

I want to be able to restore my computer to a date prior to today's installation. My laptop is an HP Pavilion Entertainment PC. Any suggestions? Thanks

Right click on the screen and click graphics properties if you can. It sounds like it is using the regular non-working laptop screen as the main with the external monitor as an extended screen..Make the external monitor the primary if you can get anything happening.

Thanks for the suggestion but I can't get any keys to work. All I have is the desktop photo - nothing else. Prior to downloading the standard drivers I had it working OK, just wanted to improve the resolution with the update.

You can also try pressing FN+F4 (or whichever F function key has a picture of 2 monitors on it in blue) this should clone or switch your monitor to a good one.

Thanks, but this does not work.

I don't believe it is a screen issue, but more likely an explorer.exe issue ie I don't think this is loading fully, so consequently no start-up menu, and unfortunately I can't get into the Task Manager to see if it is running.

All sorted now. I tried so many different things that I can't even suggest which one may have resolved it!
