Hello Everybody,

I'm working on a friends computer and it has no sound. In the lower right hand corner of the computer there is the speaker icon with a red X through it. If you select volume mixer from here it states that no audio device is installed. Selecting sound and the playback tab it shows speakers and says they are working. In device manager there is no visible problem, yet there is no sound. I guess it boils down to this "no audio divice installed". So what gives, I don't understand this and someone please help!!!!

Thanks,
Larry

Vista doesn't like a lot of legacy sound cards see list here for some where there are drivers. http://www.thewhippinpost.co.uk/new...
I returned to the AC97 onboard sound chip because this was supported in Vista.

Brim,

I got it back by uninstalling the device and letting it reinstall itsself but now in the task bar, and in volume control-device, it displays an icon of headphones and it says "internal speaker/headphone". Is this correct? It's not my computer and I'm not familiar with Vista so I don't know.

Thanks again,
Larry

Not near a Vista PC right now but you should be able to change to desktop speakers in Control Panel. Tray shold show a speaker not a headphone.
