Subject: New Computer For Vista
OS: 2003 Server / Xp Pro Sp2
CPU/Ram: AMD 3000+ 1024MB
Comment:

I am considering buying a new computer. I mainly use my computer for playing games, so I've waited until Vista was launched so I could get a Dx10 graphics card.

What processor would you recommend? I was considering the Intel E6700 (2.66GHz x2), or since I wont be upgrading for a couple of years, an Intel Q6600 (2.4GHz x4). Does Vista have multicore support? And are Intel core 2's x86 or x64? I would be getting Ultimate, if that makes any diference.

Well the answer to your question about vista having multicore support, since it is the newest OS, yes it will.

here's an actual processor benchmark comparison sheet:

if you're looking forward to play games you should stick with a x86 OS for a good while.

to learn more about intel's core 2 cpu, read this wiki:

as for directX 10 graphic cards ... the only two cards that are fully dx10 compliant as of yet are nVidia's 8800 series ... GTS from $400, GTX from $600

Gamers should definitely stick with XP for the time being. If you insist on getting Vista, setup a dual boot system with XP - use XP for gaming & Vista for...uh...what is that Vista is better at again? Oh yeah, it's prettier.

well ... he wants dx10 so there's no way around vista.

google for 'gamers blackmailed vista dx10' and have fun reading through the uproar :-)

I can imagine what people are saying. Probably quite similar to the people complain about Vista's heavy system requirements.

Does anyone remember that XP also needed (at the time) quite a powerful system too?

Besides, my current machine is over two years old and is only slightly above the minimum for most new games. So I would be considering a new machine anyway, and OEM Vista is definately cheaper than retail.

read Tom's Hardware Guide Vista Benchmark and see how badly vista was outperformed by the same system running XP. they've been an Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 (Conroe 65 nm, 2.93 GHz, 4 MB L2 Cache) w. 2 gb and a hi-end graphic card HIS Radeon X1900XTX IceQ3 (650 MHz)512 MB GDDR3 (1550 MHz).

then think again :-)

It's difficult to reply to that without going "yeah, but", so I will.

Granted Xp beats Vista hands down at the moment, but (hopefully) that will not be true in a few months' time. So if I am buying a new computer I may as well get Ultimate now as an OEM, and run Xp until vista support picks up. It'll be cheaper than buying retail later.

i'd wait buying a new computer if it has to be vista ... because the hardware you have in mind will perform way better with XP (even in a 'few months' time' :-) and when the teething bugs in vista have been exorcised (hopefully) in a couple of month time you'll find faster CPUs and video cards on the market.

IMO, Vista's rise to glory is gonna be much slower than XP's.

There are very few DX10 games at the moment (2?) & very few DX10 video cards (2?) & DX9 games don't perform near as well on Vista because of poor drivers, "psuedo" DX9 support, & "psuedo" openGL support.

It doesn't make sense to invest $1000+ in a Vista gaming machine yet, especially when there's no games & no hardware that can really make use of it. In 6-12 months, bugs will be worked out (SP1?), drivers will be perfected (hopefully), there'll be more hardware choices, & hopefully a few more games.

Yeah, I finally concede the point. I'll wait for a few months before getting a new machine. In the mean time I'll look at getting a new graphics card, one that I can use in my future machine.

Oh and $1000? I wish. I was looking at over £1200. Thats over $2200 USD. The comments I'd like to make about the vast mark up on British electronics would almost certainly get me banned from this forum...

Saw that before. Obviously paying for the priviledge of running Vista. Taking "Windows tax" a bit far though.

Personally, I think this was a better one, but it is off-topic.
