my pictures weren't in the windows backup fil

Specs: Windows Vista
Had to format and reinstall Windows (Vista), and used the backup utility my computer offered. Im not a tech genius, and english is not my native tongue, so please excuse me. I had two options. Either backup only the windows part of my harddrive and both that and all docs, pics etc. I chose both. I followed the backup while it was processing and saw all the files being 'scanned'. I saw it flip through my photos and documents. It took hours and hours, But now that I've formatted and opened the backup file, It only has what looks like the windows part in it. It doesn't even look like it has all the win files. I have no idea how much space such a file should take up, but it is only 2.440kb big. Does that mean that the backup file is corrupted/damaged?

What is the backup file name?
How and what did you transfer the file to?
