I was on Vista last night and all was well, and I've just this past week started to like using it more and more, and it has taken priority over XP x64 edition on my machine.
However, this morning I started up and there was no network (and hence no internet) activity. Which I found odd as it was working last night, but I restarted, and after a slightly longer startup than usual, my "lights" in the system tray lit up and indicated that I had both network and internet access. So i thought all was well.
Anyway tonight I went to go back on my computer and again there was no network/internet access, just the monitor lights in the tray with a red "X" on them. So I tried XP x64. My internet and LAN works perfectly, so it's not a cable issue.
I went back into Vista and tried reinstalling my nVidia network drivers, but this in turn just made Vista unusably slow, and I noticed the "System" process in Task Manager was using a hefty whack of the CPU.
I had to reset as there was no other way of getting out, so I started with "Safe Mode with Network Support" - the result? I can use my network and internet in Vista in this sade mode. But not in normal mode.
Also I noticed in the Services console, "Services.msc", a few services had changed to "Automatic (Delayed Start)" which is something I had never seen before. I double clicked them and set these to just "Automatic", hoping that would solve my problem, but sadly no luck.
I don't know what the hell is going on! I also went to do a system restore, but was informed that no restore points had been created, so that option is already out.
Any ideas on this one? It's really annoying because I had just had Vista set up and running perfectly well!
Any help much appreciated,
Cheers

In my time with vista to this point, I have learned that the event logger is a heck of a lot more detailed then xp ever was... have a look through there for errors.

Thanks for the reply.
I've had a look in the event viewer, and you'r right, it's much more advanced, but I can't see anything noticeably wrong with regards to networking. I'm at a complete loss here!

Hmmm actually on further reading online it seems some services are SUPPOSED to have "Delayed start", so i'm not sure that's an issue? I don't suppose anyone could run their Services.msc and tell me which, if any services have "Automatic (delayed start)" next to them?
Cheers

Windows Vista introduced the fourth services startup type after Automatic, Manual & Disabled:
Delayed-Autostart Services
This services is explained in the article below. Who knows it may ring a bell in what you have been doing without knowing it.

Thanks for all the replies so far, still no luck although there is a new development.
If I go into safe mode (with network support of course) and uninstall the Nvidia network driver, when I restart in *normal* mode it installs the driver again for the network card, and the internet/lan is useable without a reboot. I thought this had sorted the problem, but upon a reboot, the problem will return whereby I just have a red X over my network indication monitors in the system tray. Obviously I can't keep doing this whenever I want to go online in Vista!
I also set the services which I had changed to Automatic back to "Automatic Delayed Start" but this has had no effect on the problem at all.
This is driving me nuts and I can't see a solution.

Well that one's sorted I think - as in so far so good:
It was Microsoft Virtual PC! I installed it on Friday and totally forgot about it when thinking of possible candidates causing the problem.
Uninstalled it, and now it seems to be ok.
