Go into Add/Remove programs and select Office or Word. You should have the choice of repair. If not uninstall and then reinstall AFTER you have run chkdsk /f on the drive and defragged the drive. You do this last two steps first to make sure what you are installing to [hard drive/file system] is in good shape
That would be if you suspected normal.dot was corrupt. Usually Word when starting up would tell you that. Even so before removing the file you should run chkdsk /f to make sure its not the file system vs the file being corrupt.
