OS: Windows Vista x86
CPU/Ram: AMD3000+ 1GB
Product: Shuttle
Comment:

I have a crappy Radeon Xpress 200 builtin chipset which can only run the latest 3d games in choppy framerates at best. It is only 64mb. With such amount of memory I know I can do nothing but dream about it. But when I install vista something suprise me. The os had boosted my graphics power up to 440% as if by magic! So is this the latest vista revolution or just a vain number? Well I'm not sure what exactly vista is up to. At the propertise page it show me something I cannot interpret but this certainly looks good:

Adapter Type: RADEON XPRESS 200 Series (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM)

Total Avail Graphics Memory: 287MB
Dedicated Video Memory: 64MB
System Video Memory: 0MB
Shared System Memory: 223

So my question is does it mean that I can save myself an arm now because by vista's magic I can finally have a '223mb' card to play the latest games?

1st of all, it always helps when you list your system specs.

2nd, you have ATI Xpress 200 integrated graphics...whether it has 64MB or 287MB, it's not gonna play 3D games well.

3rd, I'd like to know where you're getting this 223MB extra from? You graphics may have 64MB dedicated & there may be a way to allocate more thru the BIOS, but 223MB is a strange number...usually it's 64, 128, 256. Even so, Vista is not gonna change your BIOS setting for you...it would have to be done manually.

1)Radeon Xpress200
Bafflo ram 512mb x 2 ddr400
Seagate hd 160GB sata I
Nvidia ULi 5287 sata raid

2)Just when chewing over this matter I came across this site:

One dude commented he was able to play BF2 with just 32mb ram? Can you believe that? Is that a bull I wonder.

3) Sorry for that 1. I mean Total Avail Graphics Memory is 287MB

But lastly as for the BIOS Setting how should I change it? It reported 64mb for aperture size in AGP terms. But my radeon is in PCIe.

Here is why it's running choppy lack of video ram and it's only 32bit. You can't change the bits most graphics card now of days have at least 128bit or higher.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ OC 2.7ghz
2GB Dual Channel DDR 3200
Nvidia 7900GT
SATA II 2x 300gig 7200rpm 16mb cache RAID-0
Gigabyte Nforce 4 SLI

But it is still integrated graphics...it is NOT a video card.

I'm guessing you have a SFF PC? Possibly this one?

It apparently has a PCI-E x16 slot so if you wanna play 3D games & play them well, I suggest you invest in a video card.

Yes it's the same. Hope it won't be too long for dx10 card to come forth and go down in price and in watts. You know, my psu is only 240W.

they may go down in price but certainly will go up in watts ... next gen video cards require 1000w psu and higher.

Next gen video cards require 1000w psu? where are you getting that from? The next gen directX 10 cards will require a powerful psu but not anywhere near what you are saying, unless you are running a directX 10 card on a dual Xeon server pc, LOL.

A good quality 600watt psu or higher will run the next gen directX 10 cards fine, but that's for highend directX 10 cards. Mid to low range directX 10 cards won't need that much power, all you need for those cards is a good quality 500watt for mid range or higher psu and 350watt psu for low range or higher psu. Another thing to consider is that the watts on newer cpu's are continuing to fall from 110watts to now 35watts on some desktop mainstream cpu's.

So it all depends upon how many watts your cpu has and how much are you going to game to determine how much watts and amps you will need on a psu.

Too bad my barebone is a propietery pc. Maximum upgrade allowed is only 250W. Some reported that a mid range card added could run it at a total of 195w at full load.
