Specs: Windows vista
I own a 2007 or 2008 Gateway GM5664 desk top computer serial number GC78121002830. I haven't used it in about 3 years because I forgot it was at my father in-laws house. I just brought it home and hooked it all up. It seemed to be going well then suddenly the screen went black. The modem and screen are both on

I don't know why you mentioned the modem as that's irrelevant to your problem.

You must first establish that the monitor is in full working order by hooking it up to another PC or laptop to see if it gives you a picture. Just because it is "on" does not prove it's in full working order, so check that first, then post again.

If you now never ever see anything at all on the screen then it is about certain you have a hardware fault (ie something has failed or has become disconnected). As given, you start by checking out the monitor. Borrowing another one is also a way to prove the point.

If the monitor and its cable are OK you are looking at a problem inside the PC.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

You say: "The modem and screen are both on " - presumably both are powered directly from a mains outlet.

Are there any indicator lights on the desktop unit itself?

Any indicator(s) of hard drive activity?

Any sounds of life (as in fans powering/running up?

You obviously have moved the unit from one location to another. Quite possibly something may have become displaced in their sockets/connector...?

Might be useful to remove the power cord; open the case and carefully reseat all internal connectors?
