my computer keeps asking me to run programs

Specs: Windows Vista
I was using my computer, then out of the blue I exited the internet, then opened it again and it had a pop up come up as a file download asking me to run save or cancel, so I clicked run, and it looked like the internet came up but then did the same thing for the pop up, and keeps doing it. Then I shut off my computer, and now it wont start up any of my start up programs. instead it gave me the pop ups for all my starting programs. I tried opening them but it does the same thing with the pop up, the only thing that loads is my fire fox.. what the hell happened and how can I fix it :(

Boot to safe mode and try restore point.

Don't run stuff you don't know about and get a good protection software. Norton, Mcaffee or even Microsoft's security essentials.

Safest of the lot is never to "Run" anything (it was the very worst option). If you save it to a known location it gives you one more chance to decide what it is. If you decide it is good then you just double click it and it will run.

Please come back and let us know how you got on.

You got your self a Root Kit Virus. Never click run unless you know you just downloaded the program. To fix the computer you will need to boot to safe mode like Jefro suggested and run a malware removal program like...

Just a warning, if this is truely a Root Kit then some times it infects your system files and after the malware removal your computer will not boot again. So, make sure you can locate the System DVD that came with your computer just in case you have to do a repair install after removing the malware.

Good Luck.

you should boot into safe mode to scan your computer but you should not do a system restore you should actually disable system restore while getting rid of your virus
