Comment:

My "NEW" Vista PC has a Trial Version of MS Office which includes WORD. I do not need either one, because Word Pad will do fine for me. However, creating a DOC in Word Pad and "Save as" Word opens and saves it in Word after I decline to activate MS Office.
I only can do this 25 times and God knows what happens then. Has someone figured out how to go around that or do I have to spend the Money for MS Office? (Which I don't ever use). Thanks.

To change Vista File association for Wordpad, read the following article.

isn't Rich Text the default Wordpad format?

in case you want to keep MSO for later activation, open my computer, go to Tools, Folder Options, File Types and associate *.DOC with Wordpad.

or have a look at these alternatives:

http://www.openoffice.org/

http://www.abisource.com/

both free, open source and pretty much compatible to their MS counterparts.

Duh you're rite The_oracle. The other option to save files in Wordpad is the plain vanilla TXT file extension.

although wordpad is able to save as DOC, i wouldn't call it 'compatible' to Word

i'd go with RTF ... not much formatting with TXT :)

Of course OpenOffice version 2.0.1 will run on Vista. You just need to be prepared if you go that route. Click on the link below for more info to be read FIRST.

sure OpenOffice is nice, but if a decent word processor is all you need then AbiWord will do the job (link #2 in response #3).

works well with Vista and the documents are compatibel with MS Word

I use Open Office with Vista and it's perfect. Reads .doc extension and will save to it as well. It also reads all my old MS Word files as well. It's a great alternative

Once I thought I was wrong, now I'm not so sure!

A big boost for OpenOffice!

Guess who came today to knock the door of OpenOffice and offer to join the development community to collaborate on future versions of the software?

IBM! Yeah you heard me right - International Business Machine!
