Hi,

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FE890 (a laptop) with a Samsung SyncMaster 205BW connected to its VGA port. The video is NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600.

I have my computer set up so that there is no screen saver, but the display should turn off after a half hour. When I have no monitor connected to the laptop, the display turns off as it should. However, when I have my monitor connected to it, once the computer has been idle for 30 minutes, it stops sending a video signal to the monitor, but the monitor doesn't realize that it's supposed to turn off. As far as the monitor can tell, the signal was stopped by accident, so it continues to look for a signal and once it can't find one, a "connection lost" (or something similar) box comes up on the screen and stays there forever.

At one point, I had this exact same setup, only the monitor would turn off as it should. But since that time, I have re-installed Windows, and ever since then it has been having this problem. I have the latest drivers for both the video and monitor. The video drivers are 7.15.11.6743, dated 11/7/2007 and the monitor drivers are 3.0.0.0, dated 1/30/2007. I also checked for any settings on the monitor itself and couldn't find anything.

Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!

the monitor off option doesn't actually turn the monitor off as if you were to push the power button but puts it into it's energy saving state and no video signal is being obtained from the video adapter in return.
