Missing operating system usually means either a damaged hard drive or a damaged boot sector. (so the bios doesn't find the boot code it expects). If the former, you'll need to replace the hard drive & reinstall windows. If the latter, you'll need to boot from Vista install disk & choose the repair option. Get to a command prompt. run chkdsk c: /r first. Then I'd run bootrec /fixmbr followed by bootrec /fixboot - see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927392 for more info, there may be more stuff missing and that page gives more extensive recovery options.

... alternatively booting up via <F8> to command prompt from the repair option Advanced Tools then typing as shown #4 here:

... bcdedit /enum (should help towards resolving the problem after typing the correct command)

mavis007 - if the bios is not finding an operating system, F8 won't work as its a feature of win7 (which the bios is not finding...). So you'll need an install DVD to access repair mode.

And if you get the system running again, download a hard-drive diagnostics program from the drive-manufacturer's website. Your problem may not be completely solved with just a restoration of the data on the drive...
