missing cd/dvd in visa

i installed a dvd burner and when both the dvd and cd are hooked up they dont show up in my computer or device manager, i changed the ide cable and they work fine, is this a driver prob? Or is this another vista nightmare, can someone help, ive never seen this one, if one drive is hooked up it shows up in both places but if both, they dont exist???

Also ensure slave is on the slave IDE connector (usually the gray one), and master is on the master IDE connector (usually black).

You need to word your message more appropriately in the future - it is sorta confusing but reading between the lines I assume you mean the IDE cable used for the optical drives work with other drives like the HDD but just not with those two devices hooked up right?

Is the cable a 40-pin or 80-pin cable & as hinted by mattie - are they appropriately jumpered?

Also have you tried cable select settings for the drives?

On the back of your optical drives are jumpers.
The middle two pins are slave and the two pins all the way to the right are master. Now connect your IDE cables accordingly.

it was the jumpers, it crossed my mind but with this system i wasnt sure since it has had all kinds of wierd wonderful vista issues, thanks for the help
